Day 2 : 9 August 1987, Excursion to Kärkevagge
The day start with a beautiful morning, the weather stays friendly the whole day. Fifteen degrees and the wind is comfortable. I take the morning train, 8.32, towards Narvik. I leave the train at the Låktatjåkka halt. It is not only me that do that. To walk the five kilometers in the valley Kärkevagge to the lake Rissajaure is a popular excursion for a day. Everybody walk in their own pace, and soon we are spread out along the track. Kärkevagge  is interesting because of all the boulder stones, and the lake. Kärkevagge do mean the valley of stones. Rissajaure has a very clear water, though the lake is deep should one be able to see the bottom of it. The wind creates small waves on the surface which make it impossible to verify the truth in it. The valley is one way, unless one wants to make the effort to walk up on the steep mountain slopes that surrounds the lake on three sides. I don't.

Before I reach the Låktatjåkka halt do I turn east and walk on flowering meadows to the valley that leads up to  the Låktatjåkka cabin. To the north is a magnificient view of a landscape with many small lakes. The track up to the cabin is broad and follow a brook. Halfway up do I have lunch. A sudden wind takes my hat and lay it gently in the brook and it sails away. The water is fast but I am faster, I run along the brook and manage to catch the hat before it disappears. The cabin is famous for its waffles, but I am not hungry and pass without staying. The first part down towards Björkliden is on a large snowfield. After that is it a good track and a gentle donwhill. I walk rather fast since I want to catch the train at 17.15, I do not want to walk the eight kilometers between Björkliden and Abisko. Five minutes before the train arrives can I sit down, a short moment of rest in the sunshine. The ladies in my room in Keron has left, instead are there two young men, all there belongings are spread out in the room.
