Hiking in Sarek - Board and lodging

Sometimed one need to stay overnight to or from a hike, perhaps one do not want to hike with tent, but sleep more comfortable in a hut or fell station. Food do one need as well. I collect here information of what I know and used in my visits in the area. There is of course more than I mention here. For more information about prices and opening times of the huts and fell stations see svenska turistföreningen. For the huts on Padjelantaleden visit Badjelánnda Laponia Turism. In my link page under "accomodation" are some links as well. In my photo album are pictures of the places. Since things change is my information valid for my last visit and only for guidance, it may be out of date, and is far from complete.

GÄLLIVARE
yuoth hostel, restaurants, shops

Gällivare has a youth hostel at walking distance from the railway station. There are some that offer private rooms. I do not know of many restaurants, I have visited the chinese restaurant for lunch. Nearby is an indian restaurant, New Delhi. Close by is the cafe Åhult. When I was at the airport (2001) was there a small cafe, which was closed (2002). Opposite the railway station is an hotel and pub and restaurant. There are all types of shops in the village where one can buy supplies. The Gällivare camping is located next to the Vassara River. Hotel Dundret is a small nice hotel near the railway station.

JOKKMOKK
youth hostel, restaurants, shops

Jokkmokk has a youth hostel in the centre of the village. During summertime is breakfast served, else one can buy supplies in the shops in Jokkmokk. I have taken breakfast in 'Konditori City'. There are several fast food, pizza and hamburger, restaurants. Hotel Gästis has an excellent and recommended restaurant. But in 2004 was it open only for lunch, so we had dinner at the chinese restaurant instead. For lunch try the restaurant at the Ajtte fell museum. There are all types of shops in the village where one can buy supplies.

KVIKKJOKK
fell station, small shop, restaurant

Kvikkjokk is a small village where the bus from Murjek/Jokkmokk end. The fell station is placed at the shore of the fierce stream Kamajåkkå Previously did the fell station have full board, with a good restaurant. At my last visit in 2004 did they serve breakfast, and simple meals in the evening. Self service kitchen. There are rudimentary supplies in the shop at the fell station. In the "old shop" som hundred meters from the church was in 2004 a small, a Naturum, and a restaurant.

RITSEM
youth hostel

Ritsem is where the bus from Gällivare end. It is placed in a barack used by the workers who built the water power plant. In the reception is a small shop, only with tanned and dry food, and some other rudimentary supplies needed. Not for buying supplies for a hike, but you can get e.g. milk, yughurt but very limited. There is a self service kitchen.

SALTOLUOKTA fell station

Saltoluokta is a fell station situated in a birch forest at Kungsleden, where the boat from Kebnats land. It has a full range of offers, simple cabins to full board. There are many organised activities.

STORA SJÖFALLET
mountain centre

Stora Sjöfallet is where the bus to Ritsem make a short stop. I have never stayed there, but have many times had coffee in the restaurant. Offers full board, as well as simple cabins.

KUNGSLEDEN
Fell stations, huts, shelters

Kungsleden is well equipped with huts. At Saltoluokta is a fell station with full board, and also with other possibilities. Huts are at Sitojaure, Aktse, and Pårte. Shelters Autsutjagge, Sitojaure, Laitaure, and Rittak. In Kvikkjokk is a fell station with full board but also other possibilities. In some of the huts can one buy rudimentary supplies. In Aktse can one buy fish from the local people.

PADJELANTALEDEN
Staloluokta, Änonjalme, and huts

Padjelantaleden is well equipped with huts. In Tarradalen and Vaisaluokta are they operated by the tourist federation, the other huts are operated by the same villages. In Staloluokto can one buy dried reindeermeet, fish, bread, and rudimentary supplies. To my knowledge can one hire a hut at Kutjaure and buy fish. In Änonjalme is a cafeteria where one server smoked fish.

ÖVRIGT
Shelters, cots

Shelters are small cabins with place for two to four persons, and only to be used in case of bad weather. Dead wood may be used in the stove for heating and making food. Be so kind to fill the supply with dead wood before you leave. There are some shelters on Kungsleden; in Atsutjvagge between Saltoluokta and Sitojaure, on the south shore of Laitaure, and Rittak between Laitaure and the Pårte cabin. There was one at the west shore of Alkajaure, and another one in Njåtjosvagge. These, the Alkacabin and Njåtjoscabin, was removed november 2001, they were in a bad shape, and had not been maintained for a long time. One other reason was that Sarek should be a place without any type of accommodations for the visitors. On Nordkalottleden between Vaisaluokta and Hellemobotn is a shelter Rautojaure, which I have stayed one night in (2002). The stove was in very bad shape, but else it was fine. The lake outside is suitable for taking a bath in. Rinim at the west end of the lake Sitojaure is the summer place for a same family. They transport people on the lake, one can stay overnight in a lap cot, and have a nice time in their sauna. Afterward cool down by taking a bath at the beach, and buy some fish for dinner.
